Title: Discovering Color Vision Changes After Starting a Marketing Career
In the world of digital marketing, color choices can make or break a message. Recently, I uncovered a significant aspect of my own perception that had been shaping my work in subtle ways: color vision differences that I didn’t fully recognize until after I started my career.
For a long period, some of my design decisions elicited surprised reactions from teammates and clients. I’d proudly share a graphic, only to hear, “Are you sure about that color palette?” What I assumed was a matter of taste turned out to be a difference in how I perceived colors.
After a few candid brand reviews and a lighthearted joke from a friend about colorblindness, I decided to get tested. The result: red-green color vision deficiency.
The discovery was at once humbling and a touch humorous, yet it marked a pivotal turning point in my professional journey. Since then, I’ve integrated accessibility tools into my workflow and collaborated more closely with designers to ensure color choices communicate effectively to a diverse audience. This shift has not only improved the quality of my work but also enhanced collaboration within the team.
If you’ve ever had a similar moment of self-discovery after starting your career, I’d love to hear about it. Are there others who’ve learned something important about themselves in the early days of their professional path?
Here’s to continuing to grow as a marketer who values clarity, accessibility, and teamwork.
